Dance Council of North Texas to Partner with DISD Homeless Education Program

The Dance Council of North Texas (DCNT) has received $5500 in funding from the Dallas Independent School District. The DCNT will use the funds to bring dance education to 100 homeless children attending the Dallas ISD Homeless Education Summer Camp.

For 20 years, the Dallas ISD Homeless Education Program has conducted inclusive camp experiences at no cost to children from 28 homeless shelters throughout the city of Dallas. Dance and movement specialist, Lynn Moon Schellenberg, R-DMT, has provided educationally sound dance programming at the camp for 5 years. This summer Lynn integrates American history with dance styles of the 1950's and 60's. From the stroll to the mash potato, the jitterbug, hand jive, twist, the monkey and more, kids will experience historical dance forms while eliciting current events of the era.

The camp is held at the Cesar Chavez Learning Center on 110 North Carroll Street in Dallas, July 1st through the 26th. There are 10 days of dance education classes with four 1 hour classes each day. By participating in these dance classes kids from age 6 to 16 can easily learn to incorporate fun, healthy movement experiences into their daily lives.

The Dance Council is proud to partner with the Dallas ISD Homeless Education Program to ensure invaluable learning experiences at the summer camp. Through dance education students can learn history, gain heart healthy exercises, and improve self awareness and self esteem while partaking in one of the hottest art forms of today!
