Dance Currents Inc. Presents ANGELS AFOOT at Green Street Studios Today

Dance-Currents-Inc-Presents-ANGELS-AFOOT-129-20010101

Dance Currents, Inc. is presenting, "Angels Afoot", the first in their series of Sunday afternoon concerts of dance and music at Green Street Studios, 185 Green Street, Cambridge, Massachusetts today, December 9, 2012 at 2pm. Admission is $18 per person, $15 for Boston Dance Alliance members.

The program will include three dance pieces, and one original piece of music. Ressourcement, the first piece on the program is to Bach’s Cello Suite in D major, and will be played live by Peter Zay. The next piece, Emergence, to Archangelo Corelli’s Concerto #8 in G minor is a retelling of the Christmas story in dance. Peter Zay will play, Elegy, his own composition for cello, and Dawn, a dance to Louise Farrenc’s Trio for flute, violin and cello in E minor and Nadia Boulanger’s Pieces for Cello and Piano will finish the program. The inspiration for this set of dances comes from moments of transcendent memory: a sacred space, (Ressourcement), a birth (Emergence) and the moment of creation (Dawn). The Dance Currents dancers performing are Jennifer Burpee, Sarah Josselyn, Mina Muraoka, Lauren Previte, Kai Sherman and Ali Smith.

Kathy Hassinger, Artistic Director of Dance Currents, Inc., teaches Perspectives in World Dance at Emerson College. She produces historical modern dances by famous choreographers as well as pieces by emerging choreographers. In January, 2011 Dance Currents produced One Hundred Years of Modern Dance at the Cambridge YMCA theater. A few of their productions in the Boston area and New York City include Dances to the Music of Archangelo Corelli (2004), Three Modern Choreographers (2005), at Triskelion Arts in NYC, Bridging the Gulf (2006) and The Haiku Project (2012) both dance and music concerts to benefit victims of Katrina and the Eastern Japan Earthquake respectively. Dayspring (2009) was a concert she produced with prizewinning composer, Dr. Del Case, for Musica Eclectica, at Eastern Nazarene College. Theodore Bale, in a review of her work mentioned, “Hassinger’s dances have a sweeping quality and an intelligent musicality.”

Peter Zay is the principal cellist of the Plymouth Philharmonic Orchestra and a member of the Hartford Symphony Orchestra. He has performed with many other organizations including the Boston Lyric Opera, the Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra of Boston, the Boston Modern Orchestra, the New World Symphony, and the New Haven and New Bedford Symphonies. As a member of the American Sinfonietta he has toured throughout Europe and recorded the complete Beethoven Piano Concertos with Garrick Ohlsson on the Natural Soundfields label. Peter has concertized in many of the world’s most notable venues including Vienna’s“Musikverein”, Frankfurt’s “Alte Oper”, Jordan Hall in Boston, Tanglewood, Madison Square Garden, and the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall. As a chamber musician, Peter has been an invited guest artist on multiple occasions with the Saravasti String Quartet in Murcia, Spain, and has performed frequently with Leonid Sigal on the Sunday Serenades Concert Series at the Wadsworth Athenaeum in Hartford.
