Emory Dance Company Presents Fall 2012 Concert VAULT, Now thru 11/17

Emory Dance Company Presents Fall 2012 Concert VAULT, Now thru 11/17

Choreographic treasures from personal vaults along with newly created works comprise Emory Dance Company's fall concert, "Vault," today, November 15-17 in the Dance Studio of the Schwartz Center for Performing Arts. This concert showcases the work of Emory faculty members Gregory Catellier, Tara Shepard Myers, George Staib and Lori Teague. In addition, New York choreographer and performer Monica Bill Barnes created a new work for ten Emory Dance Company members in a 10-day fall residency. Each dance offers a fresh perspective on how people are viewing, managing or living in the world today.

Catellier's "Of Kiltering" explores the concept of balance: spatially and physically, as well as examining the balance of power among people. "Something in the Big Frame Moved," a new work from Teague, celebrates the strength, humor, persistence, generosity and determination inside women. Using movement material created by the company of nine dancers, the piece examines how individual histories shape identity.

Myers' "BODIES on SOUND on BODIES" is an equal mix of jazz and modern styles of dance, a fusion of style that follows suit with the current trends in contemporary dance. Staib's piece, a reflection on social mores and the ecstasy of release from the predictable, is set to a variety of music styles and delves into mood and atmosphere, rather than focusing on narrative. Finally, guest choreographer Monica Bill Barnes' "Small Finale" celebrates individuality, humor, and the innate theatricality of everyday life.

The Emory Dance Company presents its fall concert titled "Vault" today, Nov. 15 through the 17th, 2012 at 8 p.m. with an additional 2 p.m. matinee on Nov. 17 in the Schwartz Center Dance Studio, 1700 North Decatur Road. For tickets ($12 general public; $10 discount groups; $8 students), information, a listing of discount categories and directions, visit http://arts.emory.edu or call the Arts at Emory box office at 404-727-5050. A reception follows the Nov. 17 concert and proceeds from that performance benefit the Sally A. Radell Emory Friends of Dance Scholarship Fund.

The mission of the Emory Dance Program is to provide a curriculum that interweaves both the practical and theoretical to foster students' creative, intellectual, and communicative powers in the field of dance. We seek to develop skilled and uniquely expressive individuals who move and act with intelligence and sensitivity, think independently, and value original thought and diversity.
