Gypsy Duende Dancer Carolina Fonseca Performs A POET IN NY 11/17-20

Theaterlab (Carlo Altomare and Orietta Crispino, Co-Artistic Directors) presents A Poet in New York, An Homage to Garcia Lorca, choreographed and performed by Carolina Fonseca, November 17 through 20, 2010 at its downtown home (137 West 14th St., between 6th and 7th Ave.).

Federico Garcia Lorca was a student at Columbia University in 1929-30 when he wrote Poet in New York, a collection of poems inspired by New York City. Eighty years later, Gypsy Duende dancer Carolina Fonseca of Portugal has created her latest dance piece - a cohesive mix of Gypsy and Flamenco styles -- as a tribute to Garcia Lorca's astonishing, yet caustic work and a testament to her own experiences as a foreign artist living in New York City.

A Poet in New York, An Homage to Garcia Lorca explores the idea of what is to be a poet as well as what it is like being the poem. The piece delves into Garcia's life in New York and the rhythms, phrases, and the heartbeat of his poetry. Fonseca's work also confronts the velocity of life in the Big Apple, the whirlwind of people, images, and ideas. And once again asks what is the connection between the art and the artist.

The creative team includes Sara Baldocchi Byrne (scenic and costume design), Sinan Gündogdu (original music) and Tiago Mata Angelino (video installation). The performance schedule is November 17 through 20, Wednesday through Saturday at 8:00 pm. About Carolina Fonseca
Carolina Fonseca started her research of Romany dances with Myriam Szabo and later complemented her training with Ukrainian Petia Lourtchenko, particularly in Russian and Central European Romany dances. She has also studied in India, Transylvania, Budapest and Istanbul. She has performed as a dancer with Fanfare Ciocarlia, Taraf de Haidouks and Roby Lakatos. She is a member of Danza Duende® in Brussels. Carolina has taught Danza Duende® in Belgium, France, Ireland, Italy, Spain, Portugal and the United Kingdom since 2000.

About Theaterlab
Theaterlab, founded in 2006 by Carlo Altomare and Orietta Crispino, is dedicated to research into the nature of live performance. Altomare and Crispino have created experimental theatrical pieces, including Appearance - A Suspense in Being and Solo Performance Workshop. Theaterlab co-produced, along with Patrick Grant and Jocelyn Gonzales, the first MMiX Festival of Interactive Technology, which featured performances by Todd Reynolds, Luke DuBois, Elliott Sharp/Janene Higgins, Dan Trueman and his Mini Laptop Orchestra, Bora Yoon and more, in October 2009.
