STG Offers 3rd Annual Young Choreographer's Lab, 10/2-11/20

Seattle Theatre Group (STG) offers 3rd annual Young Choreographer's Lab, a unique workshop for teens interested in developing their artistic vision as choreographers as well as dancers. The Lab takes place Saturdays from 2pm-5pm, October 2 - November 20, 2010 at Velocity Dance Center (Capitol Hill, Seattle).

Young Choregrapher's Lab is designed for artists, ages 13 -19, to investigate themselves as artists, learning choreography tools and concepts through short movement studies.

Participants have the opportunity to:

* Learn choreography tools from leading Seattle choreographers
* Create movement and composition ideas
* Develop individual and group choreography through a collaborative process
* Present work at an informal showing for friends and family
* Gain experience in choreography by giving and receiving constructive feedback
* Attend selected dance performances at The Paramount and Moore Theatres to expand choreographic perspectives
* Write a proposal to create a larger project with professional mentorship in the spring (one project is selected and featured in STG's annual DANCE This performance)

"I saw there are ample opportunities for young dancers to train in Seattle, but little exploring dancemaking. I see the Young Choreographer's Lab as an opportunity for young dancers to further their growth as artists, learning what goes into creating their own work and having a personal voice," said Liz Young, STG Education and community programs manager and Program Director of Young Choreographer's Lab.

A maximum of 20 teens will be selected for the program which meets for eight weeks (3 hours/week). Each Saturday participants will explore choreography with professional choreographers. Instructors for 2010 include: Amy O'Neal (lead instructor), KT Niehoff, Kirsten Cooper, Sonia Dowkins, Mark Halm and Patricia Lent from the Merce Cunningham Company.

Young Choreographer's Lab is $175, with scholarships available to students on free or reduced lunch programs. This is a sequential program and dancers are asked to commit to the entire series. Applications are due September 17, 2010. To apply email Liz Young at LizY@STGpresents.org or call 206.467.5510 for more information about the program.

STG is the 501 (c)(3) non-profit arts organization that operates the historic Paramount and Moore Theatres in Seattle, Washington. Our mission is to make diverse performing arts and education an integral part of our region's cultural identity while keeping these two landmark venues alive and vibrant. STG presents a range of performances from Broadway, off-Broadway, dance and jazz to comedy, concerts of all genres, speakers and family shows - at both historic theatres in Seattle and venues throughout the Puget Sound and Portland, Oregon.
