Soledad Barrio and Noche Flamenca Open The Joyce Theater's 2012-2013 Season Tonight, 9/18

To kick off its 2012-2013 fall/winter season, The Joyce Theater will welcome back onto its stage some of the world's leading flamenco artists Soledad Barrio & Noche Flamenca, for an extended two-week engagement, tonight, September 18 – 30 with a program entitled Flores para los Muertos.

After selling out The Joyce Theater during her debut engagement last season, Soledad Barrio and her company Noche Flamenca, will return with an extended two-week engagement this fall from September 18-30.  The company, which Barrio founded in 1993 with her husband, Artistic DirectorMartin Santangelo, performs flamenco in its finest and most authentic form, one that creates a true communal spirit through exuberant music, dance and song.  This program, Flores para los Muertoswill feature several solos, duets and group numbers performed by four dancers accompanied by a sizzling ensemble of musicians and singers who embody the very heart and soul of flamenco.  Three new works will be presented as part of this program.  The world premiere of Rosa, a solo by Soledad Barrio with choreography by Martín Santangelo, is a piece dedicated to and inspired by Barrio's mother.  Rosa explores the differences in women's roles – as wives, mothers and daughters – as they are manifested in two generations.   Other new works include the world premiere of a yet-to-be-titled work by Manuel Gago and Pepe el Bocadillo, and the U.S. premiere of Curro, a solo performed by company member Miguel Tellez.  The program will also include some of the company's most acclaimed pieces such as La Plaza, featuring the entire company; Alegrías, a duet by Soledad Barrioand Miguel Tellez; Soleá,a solo by Alejandro Granados; andthe Soledad Barrio solo Seguiriya.
